The Art of Blending with Essential Oils

Before I go over each oil separately, you need to know how to blend and the measurement breakdown of the oils, especially if you want to create your own blend.  You want to add a carrier oil to your essential oil(s).

What is a carrier oil? Carrier oil, also known as base oil or vegetable oil, is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin in massage and aromatherapy. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, though some, such as olive, have a mild distinctive smell. Neither do they evaporate like essential oils, which are more volatile. The carrier oils used should be as natural and unadulterated as possible. Many people feel organic oils are of higher quality. Cold-pressing and maceration are the two main methods of producing carrier oils. (from google website)

When creating a therapeutic essential oil blend, you will want to add some carrier/base oil. You will want to use 28 drops of essential oil (1 oil or combination of oils added together) to ½ oz. of V-6 Oil (Young Living’s Carrier Oil). When creating a body massage blend, use 50 drops of essential oil(s) to 4 oz. of V-6 Oil. Remember to store your fragrant creation in dark-colored glass bottles.

Here are some approximate measurements

25-30 drops =                     ¼ teaspoon =                     1.2 milliliters =                    5/8 dram

45-50 drops =                     ½ teaspoon =                     2-3 milliliters =                    1 dram

75-80 drops =                     ¾ teaspoon =                     3-4 milliliters =                    1/8 oz.

100-120 drops =                1 teaspoon =                      5 milliliters =                        1/6 oz.

160 drops =                         1 ½ teaspoons =               6-8 milliliters =                   ¼ oz.

320-400 drops =                3 teaspoons =                13-15 milliliters =  ½ oz.

600-650 drops =                6 teaspoons =                25-30 milliliters =             1 oz.
